SUMMARY:Scientific Computing and Data Infrastructure in Context
DESCRIPTION:Jakob Luettgau (INRIA)\n\nThis talk will give an overview of s
cientific computing infrastructure in the context of other major infrastru
cture, with a particular focus on energy and research and education. Data
centers in recent years became a major driver of the world's total electri
city usage, which is projected to double by 2030. Similarly, data centers
impact the local environment due to their increasing size and their heat e
missions and water use. While many studies consider the operational life o
f a data center, the broader supply chain and manufacturing processes rema
in underexplored. In this presentation we will take a closer look at major
scientific IT installations such as supercomputing sites, data archives,
and research and education networks in relation to geographic, demographic
, and other major infrastructure and relate them to ethical questions unde
r this year's theme, "Building Trust in Science through HPC Co-Design".\n\
nDomain: Chemistry and Materials, Climate, Weather, and Earth Sciences, Ap
plied Social Sciences and Humanities\n\nSession Chairs: Jakob Luettgau (IN
RIA); Nico Formánek (HLRS); and Jay Lofstead (Sandia National Laboratories
 , University of New Mexico)\n\n
