SUMMARY:AI Safety Practices for Responsible Computing in HPC
DESCRIPTION:Elaine M. Raybourn (University of Central Florida)\n\nInternat
ional communities spanning government, industry, academia, and nonprofits
are eager to adopt AI systems. Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), long us
ed to assess technical maturity, are also sociotechnical indicators that s
hape human confidence in emerging capabilities. This presentation reviews
AI readiness approaches and examines how AI safety may support better unde
rstanding of ones’ own expectations of trust, as well as provide a framewo
rk for evaluating system trustworthiness. This presentation raises critica
l questions about how TRLs contribute to—or fall short of—establishing con
fidence in AI systems. We explore how TRLs can serve not only as benchmark
s of technical progress but also as tools for early detection of risk, tra
nsparency gaps, and system resilience. Finally, by integrating TRLs into t
rust-building frameworks alongside rigorous testing, validation, and stake
holder engagement, organizations may enable safe and responsible adoption
of AI systems.\n\nDomain: Chemistry and Materials, Climate, Weather, and E
arth Sciences, Applied Social Sciences and Humanities\n\nSession Chairs: J
akob Luettgau (INRIA); Nico Formánek (HLRS); and Jay Lofstead (Sandia Nati
onal Laboratories, University of New Mexico)\n\n
