SUMMARY:Opportunities for Computational Storage in Scientific Computing
DESCRIPTION:Jakob Luettgau (INRIA)\n\nThis talk will give an overview of c
omputational storage as a promising technology both to lower barriers to p
ublic data access while also reducing the time and cost for many existing
workloads that require search across or aggregation of large volumes of da
ta. The talk will give an overview of different opportunities across globa
l scientific infrastructure where computational storage can avoid moving r
aw data to compute nodes, by distributing programs to data storage locatio
ns instead of moving the data. Although the concept is not new, computatio
nal storage presents a co-design challenge that necessitates collaboration
among various stakeholders, including application developers, middleware
developers, and hardware designers and vendors. We will highlight that whi
le applications become easier to decompose and the industry converges on s
tandards, it becomes essential for the HPC community to consider opportuni
ties and raise challenges and needs to ensure interoperability with applic
ations, workflows, middleware, and systems.\n\nDomain: Computational Metho
ds and Applied Mathematics\n\nSession Chairs: Jakob Luettgau (INRIA), Kira
Duwe (CERN), and Michael Kuhn (Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg)\n\
